その６ 第五章 「中立の第三者」アメリカ宣教師団が導いた東京裁判判決
東京裁判で検察側の証言の中心を形成したのはアメリカ宣教師団でした。第三者の良心的な人々の証言とされ、南京事件の見方を決定づけたわけです。その後出てくる「証拠」「証言」と称するものも、この見方の延長上に位置付けられていきました。
東京裁判の証言者、ウイルソン、ベイツ、マギー、そして宣誓供述書を出したスマイス、フィッチ、マッカラム、はすべてアメリカ宣教師団メンバーです。そして、アメリカ大使館員による報告書、実質宣教師団によって作成された「南京安全地帯の記録」など。
ドイツ人ファルケンハウゼン将軍がトラウトマン大使に提出した「あるドイツ人目撃者による報告」がこれに加わります。しかし、ファルケンハウゼンは、蒋介石政権の軍事顧問団長ですので、この信憑性には問題があります。さらに、これは偽造文書である可能性が高いことを池田氏は証明しています。
東京裁判では１０万人以上の虐殺があった証拠として、埋葬記録が提出されています。紅卍会が43,071人、崇善堂が112,266人です。紅卍会は日本軍の許可を得て（実際埋葬料金を得て）埋葬行っていました。シャルフェンベルグの記録にも、このことは出てきます。しかし、崇善堂などという記載はどこにも出てきません。当時ほとんど活動してなかったからです。したがって、死体数はほぼ4万であったということです。中国軍総数が、約10万とみられていますので、4万は戦死者であり、市民の死体はほとんどなかったということになります。
東京裁判で、意図的に避けられていた問題が人口のことです。弁護側が、人口問題を取り上げると、ウエッブ裁判長はこれを取り上げずそのままにされました。国際委員会の報告書に、「貴国部隊が南京に入場した１３日、私共は市民のほぼ全員を安全地帯という一地区に集合させていた」と書いています。そして「安全地帯を運営する際には、総計約２０万人の世話をする必要があると見積もられている。」とも書かれています。そのご、１２月中の報告書には２０万人という数字が書かれていて、１月１４日にこの数字が２５万人と書かれるのです。南京の門は閉ざされていたので、外部から多くの人が入れるはずがありません。日本軍が行った住民登録をもとに増加させたわけです。いずれにしても、虐殺などありえないと彼ら自身が書いた文書は物語っているわけです。ウエッブ裁判長も、これをまともに論じられたらどうしようもなくなったので逃げたわけです。

Verdict at the Tokyo Trials induced by neutral third party American Missionaries
Currently, the prevailing view of the Nanjing Incident can be called “the American missionaries’ view of history.” This view is based on the accounts of American missionaries who were regarded as neutral, third-party witnesses and as such constituted the core of statements for the prosecutors at the Tokyo Trials. The view justified the missionaries’ activities during the period surrounding the Nanjing Incident and their statements were blindly swallowed up as fact without verification. Thus, China’s propaganda after the War and “newly discovered” documents by a handful of Japanese of cases of disorderly conduct during the postwar years were created along the American missionaries’ view.
There were also reports made by American Embassy officials, Documents of the Nanking Safety Zone prepared by the International Committee, reports to the German Embassy by the German, Mr. Rabe, and “A Report of a German Eyewitness,” submitted by German Lieutenant General von Falkenhausen to Ambassador Trautmann. But Falkenhausen was a military advisor to Chiang Kai-shek–any claim to “neutrality” from Falkenhausen is dubious. The author verifies that there are forged sections in “A Report of a German Eyewitness.”
It was said at the Tokyo Trials that contemporary burial records were the basis for an alleged massacre of more than 100,000 people. According to sources submitted to the court, the Red Swastika Society buried 43,071 and Chong Shan Tang buried 112,266. In a memorandum that Chancellor Scharffenberg wrote, “The Red Swastika Society has been given permission to bury the bodies.” But no mention was made about Chong Shan Tang. Burials were allowed with permission of the Japanese army and there was no mention about Chong Shan Tang in Japanese army records. Mr. Ara Kenichi says that Chong Shan Tang was not active at that time. So, Chong Shan Tang’s records are merely forgeries. It is reasonable to estimate that about 40,000 out of a total 100,000 Chinese soldiers were killed in battle, rather than a massacre of civilian.
The defense brought up the population of Nanjing, but Chief justice Webb overruled the defense.
The International Committee wrote: “It is estimated that altogether some 200,000 people will have to be cared for, when the zone is put into operation.” Throughout December, the Committee’s record stated that there were 200,000 in the Nanjing Safety Zone. But on January 14, they wrote that the population was 250,000, as a result of the Japanese army’s registration of citizens. Anyway, there is no evidence the population decreased—there was a huge slaughter of people but no population decrease?
