私共の父祖の世代、ごく身近な人たちが身の毛のよだつような残虐行為を大々的に行ったなどとは、
どうしても信じられない。この気持ちに駆られて、阿羅健一氏は「南京事件」の解明に取り組み始めた。
南京戦に参加した元将兵にインタビューすることからはじめた。３年間に１００人を超える人たちから
証言を得た。その証言を『聞き書き南京事件』（図書出版社）にまとめて以来、あらゆる方面から
南京事件の実態解明を行ってきた。結論は「東京裁判の言う南京事件は作り事だ」ということである。
３０年近い研究を振り返ると、事件が起こってから７０年、これを言い出した人、広めた人、利用した人、
踊らされた人、中国人、アメリカ人、日本人、実の多くの人がかかわってきたことが見えてくる。
本書は、これらの人々の動き、かかわりを描きつつ南京事件とは何であったのかを、明らかにしている。
