Korean Mysticism and Anti-Japanese (Seirindo Co. Ltd.)
By Tajima Osamu
Series No.5: Chapter 4 Anti-Japanese Korea was made by Japan

The author presents the following stories concerning An Jung-geun and Queen Min, who are symbols of anti-Japanism in Korea.
An Jung-geun is today an anti-Japanese, Korean national hero, but at the time he assassinated Ito Hirobumi, he was not highly regarded in Korea. Ex Emperor Gojong stated, “The perpetrator is a wanderer, totally ignorant of the meaning of things.” Among the Korean intellectuals at the time, it was the majority’s view that “An committed a stupid crime, only to become the shame of the nation.” There were 10,000 mourners in Seoul and mourning was held in other parts of Korea as well.
In Japan, however there were some nationalists who respected An Jung-geun for various reasons. The author surmises that there has been a significant change in post-war Korea; from “An Jung-geun was respected by the Japanese people”, to “even the sinful Japanese could not help but recognize sound arguments made by An Jung-geun”, to “what An Jung-geun did must be considered just.”
Queen Min was a foolish woman who led Korea to ruin. Queen Min made light of Korean King Gojong, her husband, and made the country her own, emptying the treasury for the sole purpose of Min’s prosperity. Even in the post-war years, Queen Ming’s image has been such until 1970s. In a film titled Women at Jing Fu Palace (1971), Queen Ming was portrayed as a total pain in the neck, mercilessly harassing King Gojong’s concubine to her heart’s content while Queen Min’s adversary, Daewong-gun, was favorably depicted.
However, during the 80s and onward, Queen Min image dramatically changed, one in which Koreans praised her as a “proud and benevolent mother of the people” and as a “sad queen brutally killed by the Imperial Japan’s hungry wolves.” Of course, what is stated above is entirely contrary to the facts. Emperor Sung-jong, son of Queen Ming, was at the same place when she was killed, and saw that military training division commander Woo Beomseon was the perpetrator. The Emperor later sent assassins to Japan to kill Woo, who had was escaped there.
Image laundering of Queen Ming was initiated by a book written by Japanese novelist Tunoda Fusako. Choe Kye-ho, a visiting professor at Kaya University in Korea, wrote in his book Korea—Two Thousand Years’ History of Downfall (Shoden-sha, 2001):
“A foolish female Japanese writer once wrote a sympathetic book about Queen Min. However, Queen Min was an abhorrent woman, disrespectful to her father-in-law, utterly distressed the people and ruined the country, while emptying the treasury. We should know that such ignorance of true Korean history helped to distort the relationship between Japan and Korea.”

An American Speaks on Japanese History:
The Coming Japanese Nightmare, A Unified Korea
Max von Schuler
Heart Publishers, Tokyo, 2017
Reviewed by Tadashi Hama

German-American Max von Schuler arrived in Japan as a US Marine and ended up staying for over forty years. This is his third book, published by Heart Publishers, in bilingual form, following “An American Speaks: The Japanese History That Some Want Hidden,” and “2nd Civil War: Battle for America”, reviews of which were announced in Newsletter No. 192 and 202.
Three different points underlie his view of the emergence and outcome of a potential nightmare, a unified Korea.
South Korean President Jae-in Moon is trying to pave the way for imminent Korean unification, which many people expect to bring about “economic bonanza” to East Asia. However, the author predicts a unification leadership headed by Kim Jong-un and elements sympathetic to him and of inevitable emerge of intense resentment on both sides. The left-led unified government is very likely to utilize Japan as scapegoats in order to protect itself.
Japanese leftists will “dutifully” amplify Korean anti-Japanese propaganda, which will, in turn, lead to violent clashes between Japanese and Korean residents in Japan. At the same time, turmoil in Korea will lead to waves of Koreans escaping from Korea. Under this circumstance, the Korean leadership will launch an invasion of Kyushu, in the name of “protecting resident Koreans” in Japan.
Max von Schuler writes a scenario on how this invasion will progress and end up.
In this scenario three important elements are used. The first element is, perhaps surprising to readers, the extent to which the American military in Japan resists political correctness. Up till now its military effectiveness is greatly diminished due to the demand by military leaders of “equal outcomes”. He predicts that the US military in Japan will support Japan and resist instruction from Washington, DC. The second element is the effectiveness of the Japanese Self Defense Force and the third element is the action of Koreans refugees arriving in Japan.
His scenario may be criticized as being too optimistic but very interesting to read nonetheless.

A Taiwanese Physician’s Prescription
(Namiki Shobo)
Lin Jianliang

The author asserts that the Japanese cannot possibly overcome the cancer that is China unless they revolutionize their current system and ideology. Japan must become “Black Jack”.
Black Jack, the protagonist of a comic book series of the same name created by Tezuka Osamu, is not an overachiever who is a member of a physicians’ association. Nor is he an upstanding member of the medical community, he is in fact a thorn in its side. He is immune to criticism. His methods are unorthodox, his ideas and philosophy are daring. Black Jack is determined to cure illnesses he encounters, no matter the means, and his treatments accord with his personal values.
As a physician, who chose his vocation after reading Black Jack, the author is always pondering, “What would my teacher do?”
This book is the culmination of such thinking. He concludes that “There is only one way to keep the China cancer from growing and spreading: neutralize China by breaking it up into smaller components.” He presents five prescriptions for dividing China and rendering it harmless:

1. Demand that China democratize.
2. Demand that China permit freedom of speech.
3. Enact a Chinese law for human rights.
4. Demand that China resolve its environmental problems.
5. Enact a Japanese version of the Taiwan Relations Act.

They are all realizable—if one has the determination to do so. They will be beneficial to the Chinese people and to the people of the world as well.

Comfort Women and Sex in the Battle Zone
Ikuhiko Hata
Hamilton Books, 2018
Reviewed by Tadashi Hama

The reviewer, Mr. Hama, writes that recent events in the Republic of Korea have demonstrated that it has transformed into a state that George Orwell would readily recognize—one where facts that contradict the Korean nationalist narrative can be discarded down a “memory hole”, thereby allowing the Korean nationalist elites to create a history to their liking.
A typical example would be the “comfort women” issue. Korean government and nationalists are still seeking reparation for war-time Korean “comfort women” and now “slave laborers”. However, it has been verified by objective research that there were no “comfort women” who were coerced or “sex slaves”. No document supporting such a view has ever been found.
A major reason why such ridiculous lies still prevail not only in Korea but also throughout the world is that very few authentic publications concerning the “comfort women” are available in the English language. However, a thoroughly comprehensive academic text written by Hata Inkuhiko, professor emeritus of Nihon University, has been recently translated into English and published by Hamilton Books in the US.

Hata’s book shows that the prewar and wartime Japanese military brothel system was entirely a fee-based service: the women were given an advance by civilian recruiters, worked as prostitutes exclusively for military personnel and military-related civilians until they repaid their advance and were free to either leave or continue to work. The current book also points out that the women were paid much more than civilian factory workers, prostitutes working back in the home country and military officers. The book suggests that the “comfort women” can hardly be characterized as “sex slaves”, as luridly depicted by activists and the media.
One other major activists’ claim that the current book deflates is that most of the “comfort women” were Korean—in fact, many were Japanese. Hata points out that this fact raises an interesting question: why are former Korean “comfort women” strident in seeking redress but former Japanese “comfort women” are not?
Hata goes on to show the true nature of the former Korean “comfort women” by collecting their mercurial autobiographies, which change as circumstances and the needs of their Korean nationalist handlers change. Surprisingly, as Hata points out, that former Korean “comfort women” were in fact “comfort women” have yet to be independently verified, such as by their former owners or their Korean or Japanese clients. In spite of this, their word is taken as gospel by willing audiences, including representatives of foreign governments and nongovernmental organizations.
From media coverage of the Korean “comfort women” issue, it may seem that civilian-run military brothels were somehow unique to Japan. However, this is not at all the case and Hata gives lengthy descriptions of other countries’ military brothel systems, including South Korea’s and the U.S.’s during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Probably the most useful aspect of Hata’s book is that it asks questions about the “comfort women” issue that have yet to be addressed, despite the outpouring of literature and media coverage on this subject. As mentioned earlier, the current book asks why there has been no attempt at independent verification of any of the “comfort women’s” stories. The book raises other puzzling questions, such as why are there no stories from the “comfort women” recruiters or those that ran the comfort stations? If there were “200,000 Korean comfort women”, then why are there almost no stories from those who “captured” them?
