終章　日本人は日本を見なおそう

最終章の英文をご紹介します。
本書はタイトルが示す通り、現在世界常識となっているばかりではなく、多くの日本人が受け入れているところの日本人が犯罪的な戦争を起こしたという歴史観は「連合国戦勝史観」に他ならないこと、それは客観的、科学的な真理などでは全くなく、一方的な勝利国史観であることを述べている本です。著者自身がその史観を自明のことと考えていたのが、滞日５０年に及ぶジャーナリストとしての観察と学習から、その虚妄に気がついたことを、多方面から述べている本です。
この最終章では、日本人自身が戦勝国史観やられてしまい、誇りを失っていることに警鐘と反省を促しています。特にアメリカが押し付けた「太平洋戦争」という呼称は、「大東亜」を戦域（シアター）として日本がアジア諸民族を搾取する植民地支配者であった欧米諸国と戦い、アジアを解放した「大東亜戦争」の本質を覆い隠す用語であることを強調していることに注目すべきでしょう。

Final Chapter: People of Japan, be proud of your own history

We now present the Final Chapter。
As indicated by the title of his book, “Falsehood of the Allied Nation’s Victorious Views of History as Seen by a British Journalist,” Mr. Stokes criticizes the commonly held historical view that, during WWII, Japan was the nation that prosecuted a vicious, criminal war. This has somehow become the authentic, global historical view, accepted even by the majority of the Japanese people. Mr. Stokes himself never doubted that Japan committed “war crimes”. However, after spending nearly half a decade in Japan as a journalist, he gradually realized that this historical view was wrong, the accepted historical view being merely an imposition of the victorious nations.
For example, America has forced the use of the term “Pacific War,” forbidding the more correct term “Greater East Asian War” from being used by the Japanese. But, in fact, Japan fought the war not only in the “Pacific theater” but also in the “greater East Asian theater,” against western colonial rulers who robbed fellow Asians, eventually liberating Asia. Without a “Greater East Asian War” context, the Japanese war cannot be correctly perceived and, consequently, the Japanese people’s pride cannot be restored.
He appeals to the Japanese people that they need to become spiritually independent by taking back their own historical views and their own objective view of true history.

第９章　私の心に残る人々

　第８章に引き続き第９章の英文をご紹介します。
　この章では、心に残る人々として、１、日本人とユダヤ人　２、日本文学を世界に伝えた友人たち　３、日本で出会った人々　を取り上げています。
いずれも大変興味深い登場人物であり、内容ですが、ここではその１の「日本人とユダヤ人」について触れてみたいと思います。
「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」の所有者はザルツバーガー家というユダヤ人です。ストークス氏はニューヨーク本社でやはりユダヤ人の３人のシャープな記者と意気投合するなど、ユダヤ人とのコネクションは非常に深いものになっていきます。デ・ボトンというロンドンとパリのロスチャイルド家を一つにした記者が「三島の本を書かなかったら、後悔する」と説得してくれなかったら『三島由紀夫　生と死』を書くことはなかったと言っています。
「私がユダヤ人や、日本人に親しみを感ずるのは、クーエーカー京都だからかもしれない」と述べているのも興味深いことです。何故なのかは本文をお読みください。

Chapter Nine: People I remember

We now present Chapter Nine.
This Chapter is composed of 1) The Japanese and the Jews, 2) My friends who
introduced Japanese literature to the world, 3) People I met in Japan.
Every person who appears and every story told here are very interesting. Here, I would like to touch on 1) Japanese and Jews.
The New York Times was owned by the Sulzberger family. They are Jewish. When he first visited his work place in the NYT headquarters, he met 3 colleagues and he became friends immediately. They were all sharp and intelligent, had excellent senses of humor, and were interesting and attractive, compared with other staff members. They were Jews. Since then, he found that he himself get along well with Jewish people. His Jewish fried de Botton united the Rothschild families in London and Paris as one. Mr. Stokes writes that if de Botton hadn’t persuaded him to write a Mishima book, he wouldn’t have written his book: The Life and Death of Mishima Yukio.
He then writes “The reason I feel empathetic towards Jews and Japanese is, perhaps, because I am a Quaker.” You will be interested to understand why. Read:

「東京裁判史観の受け入れは愚かだ」
（国民新聞平成２６年９月２５日号掲載）

『英国人記者が見た　連合国戦勝史観の虚妄』（祥伝社新書）がロングセラ
ーになっています。著者はニューヨーク・タイムズ元東京地局長のヘンリー・ストークス氏。共同通信は５月、本書を貶めるために翻訳者が「南京虐殺を否定、無断で加筆した」という捏造記事を配信しました。
　「国民新聞」にストークス氏と共著『なぜアメリカは、対日戦争を仕掛けたのか』（祥伝社）を著した外交評論家、加瀬英明氏との対談が掲載されました。
　ストークス氏は、共同通信捏造記事について反論するとともに、南京事件について、そして東京裁判等について対談で語っています。

It was utterly stupid to accept
the Tokyo Trials’ Views of History

The book entitled Falsehoods of the Allied Nations’ Victorious Views of History, as Seen by a British Journalist (Shodensha, New Books) has now become a best seller. The author is Mr. Henry Scott Stokes, former Tokyo Bureau Chief of The New York Times.
In May this year, the Kyodo News distributed a fabricated article claiming that the translator “added lines to deny the Nanking Massacre without the author’s consultation,” in order to disgrace this book. Mr. Stokes talks with Mr. Kase Hideaki, who co-authored Why did the United States Wage a War against Japan with Mr. Stokes (published by Shodensha).
Mr. Stokes completely denies the Kyodo News article explaining the issue in detail. The talks are concentrated on the Nanking Massacre and the Tokyo Trials/

第８章　私が会ったアジアのリーダーたち

　第７章に引き続き第８章の英文をご紹介します。
　ロンドン・タイムス、ニューヨーク・タイムスの東京支局長としてストークス氏はアジアのリーダーであった政治家に数多く会い、インタビューしていますが、この章ではそのうち金大中、金日成、シアヌーク、スカルノが取り上げられています。
金大中には、１２回以上もインタビューしているといいます。金大中は常に民主化運動の闘士というイメージを演出していましたが、その正体になかなか気がつかなかった不明を恥じています。
１９８０年に一触即発の状態にある北朝鮮にアメリカが特使を派遣した時にニューヨーク・タイムズから記者一人がどうこうすることになった時に、ストークス氏が選ばれ金日成に会い、また平壌郊外の金日成の宮殿で５日間を過ごすという体験をしています。北朝鮮高官に威厳と高尚な精神を感じていたストークス氏ですが、政治犯収容所の囚人が運ばれていくのを偶然目にしてそのギャップに驚いたことも書かれています。
シアヌークには平壌の宮殿で偶然会い、インタビューしています。面白いのは、シアヌークは『ボゴールの薔薇』という映画をつくっていますが、その撮影は平壌で行われ、日本兵の役は朝鮮人民軍兵士がエキストラとして演じていることです。この映画では日本軍は解放者としてカンボジア国民から狂喜して迎えられているということです。この試写会に金日成は正日と現れ「素晴らしい作品だ」口を揃えて褒めそやしたそうです。

Chapter Eight: Asian leaders I have met

We now present Chapter Eight.
As the Tokyo bureau chief of The Times of London and The New York Times, Mr. Stokes met and interviewed many Asian leaders. In this chapter, he discusses Kim Dae-jung, Kim-Il-sung, Sihanouk and Sukarno.
Mr. Stokes interviewed Kim Dae-jung more than 12 times. But he regrets, as a journalist, not having been aware of his true nature. Kim Dae-jung posed as a champion of democracy when in fact he only pretended to be so, as he actually fooled democracy. He was a fake, not a real person.
In June, 1980 Mr. Stokes entered Pyongyang, accompanying US Congressman Solarz, as a reporter for The New York Times. He had an opportunity to spend 5 days in Kim Il-sung’s Palace in a suburb of Pyongyang. He was with high-ranking North Korean officials. He was deeply impressed and thought they had a noble soul, having deep discussions with them. However, by accident, he came across a convoy of about 15 trucks loaded with a lot of men. He knew from their eyes that they were in a miserable situation. Immediately, he knew that they came from a prison for political prisoners. He was shocked by seeing the reality: the gap between the leaders and political prisoners in North Korea.
In Kim Il-sung’s Palace, Mr. Stokes met Sihanouk. He produced a movie entitled “Rose of Bokor,” which was shot in a film studio in Pyongyang. The story starts with a scene of Bokor, Cambodia. All the villagers come out and stand along the street to welcome the advance of the Imperial Japanese Army. North Korean People’s Army soldiers play the role of Imperial Japanese soldiers. It’s very interesting that both Kim Il-sung and his son, Kim Jong-Il, showed up for the preview of the movie and after the preview, both of them praised the movie by saying, “It was an excellent piece.”

第７章　日本はアジアの希望の光

　第６章に引き続き第７章の英文をご紹介します。
　２０１２年１２月に日印国交６０周年を祝う集会が開かれましたが、ストークス氏は基調講演を行いました。タイトルは「日本はアジアの光だった」です。
　２０世紀で最も驚くべき展開は、５００年続いた植民地支配が終焉したことにありますが、それを主導したのは日本であったとストークス氏は語ります。
　１９４３年５月に来日したインド国民軍司令官チャンドラ・ボースは日比谷公会堂で講演し「日本はアジアの希望の光だった」とはっきり語りました。
　その年の１１月には有色人種によって行われた最初のサミット「大東亜会議」が東京で開催され、アジアの独立国６カ国とインド仮政府代表が参加しました。会議では「大東亜共同宣言」が満場一致で採択されましたが、ボースは「この宣言がアジア諸国のみならず、全世界の被抑圧国民のための憲章となることを願う」と訴えました。
　この会議を「占領地の傀儡」を集めた会議というようなことを言う日本人こそ、日本を得る外国の傀儡と言うべきだと述べています。

Chapter Seven: Japan as the Light of Hope for Asia

We now present Chapter Seven.
In December, 2012, the 60th Anniversary of the Restoration of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and India was carried out in Tokyo.
Mr. Stokes was the key-note speaker and the title of his speech was “Japan as the Light of Hope for Asia.” One of the most surprising developments in the 20th century has been the sheer speed at which the 500 year curse of colonialism came to an end. And it was Japan that caused that surprise. On May 16, 1943, Chandra Bose, representative for Provisional Government of India came to Japan and gave his address at Hibiya Public Hall. Bose clearly said, “Japan was the ‘Light of Hope’ for Asia.”
In the fall of the same year, 1943, the Greater East Asian Conference was held from November 5 to 6 in Tokyo. This was the first Summit of the colored races held for the first time in the long history of humanity. At the Conference, the Greater East Asian Joint Declaration was approved unanimously. Bose appealed, “I pray to God that this Joint Declaration… may prove to be a charter for the nations of East Asia and what is more, a charter for the suppressed nations of the whole world. May this Joint Declaration be the new charter of liberty….”
