　第６章では、三島論『三島由紀夫　死と真実』を書いたストークス氏が、なぜ三島は市谷で決起して檄文をまきそして自刃したのかを書いております。
　実は自決の直前に三島本人から英文の手紙の手紙がストークス氏に送られて来ていました。
「親愛なるヘンリー
　僕が書いた論文と短編小説とを同封した。
　気に入ってくれるといいが。　
未だ最後の一遍を書いている思いによって、囚われている。
長編を書き終えてしまうと、なんだかこの世の終わりであるかのように、　感じる。　　　三島由紀夫」
　三島は自分を理解者として懸けた、という責任を痛感したストークス氏は、三島のことを書かねばならないと決意しました。しかしなかなか思うようにならず悪戦苦闘しているうちに、突然自然に手が動き出して原稿をタイプしていた、何かが憑依した体験をして著作を書いたことが語られています。

On October 4, 1970, one month before Mishima’s suicide manifestol, Mr. Stokes
received a letter, hand-written in English, by Mishima;

Dear Henry:
Enclosed are copies of my essay and short-story, which, I hope, might interest you.
I am still occupied by writing the last volume.
Finishing the long novel makes me feel sometimes as if it will be the end of the world.

Mr. Stokes thought that Yukio had placed his faith in him, in some way. He felt that he had a responsibility. So, he began to write. He wrote passages that were either boring or untrue…One afternoon, the writing came as if an invisible hand or an inner voice did the job. Something took over. Something worked. He had 40 pages or so of a manuscript that day that came out right.

第５章　蒋介石、毛沢東も否定した「南京大虐殺」

　第４章に引き続き問題の第５章をお送りします。
　第１章で、ストークス氏は書いています。「国際社会で「南京大虐殺はなかった」などと言ったら、相手にされない。南京大虐殺は、歴史の事実とされている。それを否定する人とまともな議論はできないと思われている。」と。
にも拘らず、ストークス氏はこの第５章で敢えて真っ向から南京大虐殺を否定しました。外国人特派員協会内に衝撃が走りました。それをもとに、「共同通信社」は「翻訳者がストークスの言葉を正確に訳していない」という批判記事を流しましたが、直ちにストークス氏によって否定されました。（５月９日付の祥伝社のリリース）。全くの虚報、もしくは歪曲報道でした。
さて、いよいよ５章の英文が出てきたわけです。ストークスさんは、５章のはじめに「南京大虐殺なるものはⅠ９３７－８年にかけて行われた国民党の情報戦におけるプロパガンダに他ならない」ということを強調する文章を付け加え、南京虐殺の虚構についてさらに詳しく論じています。是非詳しくご覧ください。

Chapter Five: “Nanking Massacre”: Denied by Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong

We now present Chapter Five, the most controversial chapter.
Mr. Stokes writes in Chapter One, “In international society, one will be ignored if he or she said “Nanking massacre did not take place.” Nanking massacre is a historical fact and nobody wants to debate seriously with deniers of historical facts.”
Nevertheless, he dares to thoroughly “deny” the “Nanking Massacre” in this chapter. Against this shocking statement Koyodotsushin, Japan’s leading news agency spread a press release saying that Japanese translator mistranslated Mr. Stokes’s original comment. However, Mr. Stokes immediately rebuffed this by a statement released from the Japanese publisher on May 9, 2014 that the Japanese translation correctly expressed his comment.

Mr. Stokes updates the beginning of this chapter emphasizing that The so-called “Nanking Massacre” was a Propaganda Strategy launched in China in the context of an Intelligence War dating to 1937-8. 祥伝社新書、二〇一三年、

ヘンリー・ストークス氏の『英国人記者が見た連合国戦勝史観の虚妄』は１０万部を超すベストセラーとなり、内外に大きな波紋を広げています。左翼史観の危機を感じた「共同通信」は、ストークス氏の原文を訳者の藤田氏が誤訳しているなどという虚偽報道を行ったほどです。
インタビューのテープ起こしをして現在英文版を作成中で、すでに第４章まではご紹介しました。次の第５章は、「共同通信」がケチをつけた「南京虐殺」に関する章です。「南京虐殺」など「謀略宣伝」以外の何物でもなかったことを、ストークス氏は日本語版よりも詳しく説明しているので、乞うご期待です。
さて、田中英道先生が、ストークスの本とジョン・ダウアーの本と比較しながら論ずるという大変ユニークな書評を『日本国史学』４号掲載されました。先生の御許可を戴きその英文を下記の通り発信しました。
学者のダワー氏が、何の疑いもなく今でも南京虐殺などという大嘘を前提に日本を論じているのに対して、フレキシブルな考え方をするジャーナリストのストークス氏が、事の真相に迫っているというパラドックス、というより現代の病理を鋭く突いた書評です。

Henry S. Stokes: Falsehoods of the Allied Nations’ Victorious Views of History, as Seen by a British Journalist (Shoden-sha New Books, 2013)
Mr. Stokes’s Book Falsehoods of the Allied Nations’ Victorious Views of History, as Seen by a British Journalist in Japanese version became a best seller and its English version is being edited. We have so far presented Chapter 1 to Chapter 4 in this Newsletter.
Prof. Tanaka wrote a unique book review on this controversial book in comparison with John Dower’s book Ways of Forgetting, Ways of Remembering: Japan in the Modern World.
Prof. Tanaka points out that a flexible thinking journalist Stokes rather present objective historical truth concerning Japanese modern history, especially Nanking Incident or Comfort Women issue than academician Dower, who sticks to victorious view of history which arte still prevailing in the world.

第４章　橋本市長の記者会見と慰安婦問題

　第３章に引き続き第４章をお送りします。
　本章では、慰安婦問題を扱っています。
　まず、橋本大坂市長の外国人特派員協会での記者会見を取り上げ、弁明的な発言なら、しない方がましであること、外国人特派員協会というものがどういうところかもっとよく知らなければならいと忠告しています。
　日本、韓国、ベトナムでの経験を交えて戦場での慰安婦、売春婦について歴史的な視点から論じ、日本の慰安婦「性奴隷」では全くない、売春婦だった、そのことを米国側の資料が裏付けしているとして、米軍心理戦争チームの報告書を引用しています。「慰安婦は売春婦に過ぎない」と。又、日本は兵士の性処理に当たっておおむね秩序をもって対応した。戦場のどこであっても、現地の女性の人権が蹂躙されないように「慰安所」を設置した。日本は女性の人権に、他国よりもはるかに配慮していた、と結論付けています。

We now present Chapter Four.
This Chapter deals with the “Comfort Women” issue. Mr. Stokes first refers to this issue in relation to Osaka Mayor Hashimoto’s press interview, based on his stance as a journalist and nature of the Foreign Correspondent’s Club of Japan. Then he elaborates his thinking concerning the comfort women from a historical point of view. His conclusion is that “Japan adopted an orderly form of catering to the sexual needs of soldiers in overseas battlefield. So as not to infringe upon the human rights of women in the local area, the comfort station was prepared. The Japanese military paid much attention to prevent rapes by these establishments. In this sense it can be said that the Japanese military was by far more concerned about of the protection of human rights than other countries.”

Chapter Three: What did Yukio Mishima want through his death?

Mr. Stokes became Tokyo Bureau chief of The Times of London in 1968. He represented the world’s most prestigious daily newspaper in Japan. He thought of interviewing the then-most famous man in Japan, Yukio Mishima and phoned him at his residence in Magome.
Thereafter, he became quite familiar with Mishima to the extent that he later wrote “The Life and Death of Yukio Mishima” (Farrar, Straus and Giroux Inc., New York) in1974 after Mishima committed suicide at Japanese Self Defense Force HQ at Ichigaya on November 25, 1970.

Chapter Two: Is Japan the Only Country That Committed War Crimes ?

Following Chapter one, Chapter Two is presented. He writes how he changed his view on Japanese war in Asia as follows;
In English, invasion means that one country forcefully goes into the territory of another country by the use of force. According to this definition, we can acknowledge that Japan invaded the territory of the colonies of the British Empire. But having heard Hideaki Kase’s explanation, I learned about Japan’s viewpoint and changed my view as well. Japan not only invaded the territory of the British Empire but also played a vital role for Asian people, who suffered from Western colonial rule, for independence. Japan invaded and occupied the territories of western colonies. And then, Japanese officers and soldiers, with a sense of mission like that of missionaries, led their fellow Asians to independence of their countries.

第１章　故郷イギリスで見たアメリカ軍の戦車

昨年１２月に出版された本書は大きな反響を呼び、すでに１０万部を超すベストセラーとなっています。
日本犯罪国家論、東京裁判史観を批判する本はあまたあります。しかし戦勝国史観を何疑うことなく信じ込んでいた、イギリス人のジャーナリスト、しかもニューヨーク・タイムズの東京支社長の経歴を持つストークス氏が、根底的に東京裁判史観を批判するに至ったことを述べた本書の衝撃、説得力は鮮烈なものがあります。
日本悪者論に固執する既成勢力はこれを何とか葬ろうとしたいようで、共同通信事件が起きたことは知る人も多いでしょう。海外メディアも巻き込んで、ストークス氏は本当は「南京事件なるものは存在しない」などとは言っていない、日本語訳者が勝手にでっち上げた、などという虚報を流しましたが、本人と訳者の藤田氏によって、完璧に否定されました。

慰安婦問題の正しい理解のために
「史実を世界に発信する会」事務局長　茂木弘道

慰安婦問題の正しい理解のためには、次の５つの基本的な「事実」を確認しておくことが絶対的に必要である。この５つの基本的な事実は、幾多の「見解」の一つではなく、否定のしようのない客観的な社会的な事実である。しかも大事なポイントである。これらの重要な事実を無視した慰安婦問題の議論は、空論、もしくは事実の歪曲にならざるを得ない。
１、「慰安所」は、当時日本全国に合法的に存在していた「遊郭」「妓楼」「売春宿」を戦地でも開業したものである。
２、従って、慰安婦の大半は日本人であり、特に朝鮮をどうこうなどということは全くなかった。従って、現在慰安婦問題が、「朝鮮人慰安婦問題」として議論されていることは極めて異常なことと言わなければならない。　
３、従って、米軍尋問調査（US Office of War Information No.49）では、「A comfort girl is nothing more than a prostitute or “professional camp follower”」と極めて正確に報告されている。
４、慰安婦の収入は、上等兵（１０円／月）の約３０倍～１００倍という高収入
５．軍の関与は「義務」であった。
　妓楼など売春施設については、地方自治体、東京都では衛生局が衛生管理を義務として行い、警察は悪徳斡旋業者を摘発し、売春婦が不当な扱いを受けないよう監視するなどしていた。戦地では、之に加え、身の安全を確保するなどの当然の義務を軍が果たしていた。軍の関与は良い悪いの次元ではなく、当然の義務であった。

A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE COMFORT-WOMEN CONTROVERSY
Anyone who wishes to arrive at an accurate understanding of the comfort-women controversy needs to be aware of five basic facts. I am referring not to opinions or perceptions, but to irrefutable, objective, social facts. Furthermore, they convey important information, ignorance of which is certain to render debates about the comfort-women problem speculative, or worse, fraudulent. The five basic factors are as follows:
1. Until the latter half of the 20th century, prostitution was legal in Japan and houses of prostitution could be found in every entertainment district. Military brothels were established in overseas war zones.
2. The majority of comfort women were Japanese; Korean comfort women received the same remuneration and treatment, and had the same responsibilities
3. “A ‘comfort girl’ is nothing more than a prostitute or ‘professional camp follower;” this description of the comfort women in Report No. 49, issued by the US Office of War Information, is remarkably accurate.
4. The comfort women were extremely well paid; receiving 30 to 100 times more than the salary of a private first class (10 yen per month)
5. Involvement of Japanese military authorities was obligatory
In Japan, local government (for instance, the Public Health and Hygiene Bureau in Tokyo Prefecture) was responsible for the oversight of brothels. The police apprehended deceitful recruiters and kept watch to ensure that prostitutes were not mistreated. In war zones the military authorities fulfilled these functions, and also exercised their obligation to keep the comfort women safe. Japanese military administrators were simply doing their duty.

　平成２４年２月、河村たかし名古屋市長は、姉妹都市である南京市との交流の中で、日中間に刺さったトゲともいうべき歴史認識に言及し、南京で日中間の戦闘はあったがいわゆる「南京事件」なるものはなかったのではないかと思うとの私見を述べ、この問題について討論したいと呼び掛けました。
　ところが、南京市は名古屋との姉妹都市交流を中断するとし、中国共産党は「必ず代償を払うことになる」（人民日報）と報復措置を示唆しました。
　しかし、南京虐殺がなかったことは「日本『南京』学会」を中心とした過去十数年間の実証研究によって明らかになってきたことです。まして河村市長の発言は私見を押し付けたわけではなく、相互の討論を呼びかけたものです。それを封殺することは、自由な歴史研究と言論の自由を奪うことに他なりません。
　河村発言を支持する「南京の真実国民運動」が、「新しい歴史教科書をつくる会」を中心に同憂の団体が結集して結成されました。（代表：渡部昇一）「国民運動」は集会のほか、意見広告（２回）、署名運動、研究集会、パネル展など精力的に展開しました。１２月１３日（南京陥落７５周年）には、憲政記念館で大集会を開催しました。

There was a Battle of Nanking but There was no “Nanking Massacre”
by Campaign for the Truth of Nanking
In February, 2012, Nagoya city Mayor Kawamura Takashi stated that he personally believes that there was a battle fought between Japan and China but the so called “Nanking Incident” never took place, referring to the historical view, which is regarded as a thorn that prevents a normal relationship between the two countries, during a friendship exchange with visiting Chinese Communist Party leaders from the City of Nanking, the sister city of Nagoya. Mayor Kawamura also expressed his sincere hope for having mutual discussion over this issue.
However, the City of Nanking responded to Mayor Kawamura’s suggestion by announcing the discontinuation of the sister-city exchange program with Nagoya. Furthermore, the Chinese Communist Party hinted at taking retaliatory measures, saying that “Japan is sure to pay for it” in The People’s Daily.
In order to support Mayor Kawamura’s statement, a body called “People’s Campaign for the Truth of Nanking” was established by those who share the same concern as Mayor Kawamura. It developed strong campaigns including paid advertisement in news papers, public lectures, panel exhibitions, circulating bills. It also made a thorough study on the Nanking Incident collecting up-to-date research results and compiled them into a book titled There was a Battle of Nanking but there was no “Nanking Massacre”.
